Two years ago I was 50 pounds overweight. For years my doctor had told me that I needed to get rid of the pounds.

He told me I was at risk of severe conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. One day after I had walked a flight of stairs and couldn’t catch my breath, I knew I needed to do something.

I got on the Internet and read about how to change my diet from junk food to healthy eating and how to exercise effectively. However, I knew that getting to the gym was difficult for me.

However, exercising to a DVD is something I can do at home without worrying about transportation and time. That’s when I found an excellent program my Jillian Michaels, the famous fitness guru.

Do you need to lose weight? Would you like an effective program that you can do from the comfort of your home? Do you want a program that is fun and effective? Jillian Michaels Body Shred is a great program to try.

An Overview on Jillian Michaels Body Shred

Who Is the Target Market? 

I would consider the target market for this DVD to be not only people who need to lose weight, whether they be women or men, but also people who just want to stay in shape.

However, because these workouts are not easy, I think this program would be challenging for someone who is severely obese.

What Is Jillian Michaels Body Shred?

The main reason I love Jillian Michaels Body Shred is that it's a comprehensive program. She has a lot of different DVDs, but this program covers everything, and it does it for a good price, which really shocked me. 

A program like this I expected would cost a lot more. The program includes 12 DVDs, a rotational calendar, a fitness guide, and a 60-day meal plan.

One thing about Jillian Michaels is her trademark 3-2-1 format. Her signature format includes three minutes of strength training or resistance, two minutes of cardio, and one minute of active recovery.

Body Shred includes eight S.H.R.E.D. workouts and two cardio workouts. Jillian Michaels' SHRED stands for Synergistic, High Intensity, Resistance, Endurance, and Dynamic.

Using this format, Body Shred workouts follow four circuits that are six minutes long. The plan is a 60-day fitness plan where you can reach your fitness goals in just 30 minutes.

At first, I didn’t want to do the workouts because they’re hard. But I stuck to them.

If there’s one thing that Jillian Michaels is known for its hard workouts, but if you stick to them, you’ll see results. After all, it's designed for you to get a good workout in just 30 minutes. So there’s no fooling around.

In all of the other Jillian Michaels DVDs I've seen, she's the instructor with other fitness people doing the exercises with her. But with Body Shred, there are many instructors.

I started shedding fat and defining muscle only a few days after using the program. The Body Shred program has three levels of difficulty - beginning, intermediate and advanced.

One of the most important things you should do is follow the schedule that Jillian provides. Don’t just take it upon yourself to do whatever you want. Jillian’s plan for Body Shred is located in the rotational calendar.

  • Monday – Chest, shoulders, triceps, quads
  • Tuesday – Back, biceps, hamstrings, glutes
  • Wednesday – Cardio
  • Thursday - Chest, shoulders, triceps, quads
  • Friday - Back, biceps, hamstrings, glutes
  • Saturday – Cardio
  • Sunday – Rest

What is the rotational calendar? It takes the thinking out of it because it tells you which workout you need to do each day. It really helps me track my progress.

Another thing that the Body Shred includes is a 60-day comprehensive meal plan. This feature is really great for me because I was a huge junk food eater. I didn’t even know where to begin when it came to healthy eating.

But with Body Shred I get food schedules, recipes, tips, everything I need to eat healthily. You see what I learned is that if you exercise, but you’re still eating junk food, you’re not going to lose any weight.

To lose weight, you have to lose more calories than you take in. Jillian recommends approximately 1400 calories a day. When I began to analyze my food, I realize I was taking in way more than that.

Finally, you also get a fitness guide. This is really helpful because it educates you on getting prepared for workouts, tips, etc.

The Exercise DVDs 

When you do the workouts, they’re hard because you don’t get any breaks. But they’re fun because they challenge you and they’re not dull and repetitive. 

Before you dive into the programs, make sure you have:

  • Workout weights. Have 3 pounds, 5 pounds and 8 pounds on hand. You can get workout weights for cheap at places like Amazon, Target, and Walmart.
  • An exercise mat
  • Comfortable workout clothes
  • Gym shoes

Here are the Exercises:

Week 1 and 2

Launch – Focuses on building balance and core. The muscles focused on are the shoulder, chest, triceps, legs, abs, and also cardio.

Rise  Focuses on building speed and stamina. Muscles focused on are the biceps, abs, back, hamstrings, calves, plus cardio.

Week 3 and 4

Amplify – Things get harder with Amplify. Multi-muscle groups are worked with a focus on shoulders, chest, core, triceps, and quads. The focus is not on weights for this one.

Escalate  Still harder than the first two. This one continues to pump it up. The focus is on chest, shoulders, back and biceps. Cardio is in there too.

Week 5 and 6

Conquer – Still the second phase with a focus on chest, triceps, shoulders, but the focus is really on the core.

Triumph  This is another core blast

Week 7 and 8

Zenith – These are the final two weeks of Body Shred. it focuses on resistance and core.

Apex  You’ll be using weights with this one. The focus is on back, biceps, hamstrings, calves, and glutes.

Fire Up

It’s a cardio workout with moderate intensity.


This cardio will really challenge you.


This DVD explains the cast and the moves you need to learn. Remember, Jillian is not the only person teaching in this program.

Pros & Cons Of Jillian Michaels Body Shred 


  • Affordable
  • Includes everything including a calendar and meal plan


  • The exercises may be too challenging for some.
  • Jillian can be annoying because she talks a lot.
